Wegovy Pill vs Weekly Injections: What to Know About GLP-1 Drugs

The Wegovy pill is a once-a-day tablet of semaglutide, the same medicine that’s in weekly Wegovy injections, and in its main trial it helped people lose about 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. The catch is that it only works if you take it exactly as directed, on an empty stomach with a small sip of water. As of late October 2026 it is not approved in India, although cheaper generic semaglutide injections have been on sale here since March 2026. Pill or injection, these are prescription medicines, not something to buy online or start on your own.

How GLP-1 weight-loss drugs work

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after you eat. Drugs like semaglutide copy its effects. According to Cleveland Clinic, they:

That’s why the same medicine treats both type 2 diabetes and obesity. Tirzepatide (sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound) is a related drug that also acts on a second gut hormone.

What the new switching study found

The latest news is the OCTANE study, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting on 30 September 2026. Novo Nordisk’s release describes it this way:

That’s encouraging, but read it carefully. The data were released by the drug’s maker, came from a US telehealth company, had no group that stayed on injections for comparison, and only counted people who kept taking the pill for three months. It suggests switching doesn’t automatically mean losing ground; it doesn’t show the pill beats the injection.

Wegovy pill vs weekly injections: the main differences

Why the pill has strict rules

Semaglutide is a protein-like molecule that the stomach normally breaks down. The tablet contains an ingredient that helps a small amount get absorbed, and that only works when your stomach is nearly empty. So the manufacturer’s instructions say:

In practice, that means no morning chai for half an hour, and planning thyroid or blood pressure tablets with your doctor.

How well does the pill work?

The main trial, OASIS 4, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, randomly assigned 307 adults without diabetes to the 25 mg pill or a placebo, plus lifestyle advice. After 64 weeks, the pill group had lost 13.6% of their weight on average, compared with 2.2% on placebo. Stomach-related side effects affected 74% of people on the pill and 42% on placebo.

Who these drugs are for

Weight-loss trials of semaglutide, including OASIS 4, enrolled adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related problem such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnoea. They go alongside changes in diet and activity, not instead of them. Our article on why diets often don’t work explains why biology makes long-term weight loss so hard.

They’re not for everyone. Semaglutide carries a warning against use if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer or a condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. Cleveland Clinic advises against GLP-1 drugs in pregnancy, and people who could become pregnant should use reliable contraception. If you already take insulin or a sulfonylurea (such as glimepiride or gliclazide), the risk of low blood sugar goes up, so your doctor may adjust those doses.

What’s available in India right now

The Wegovy pill: not approved. On 23 September 2026, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation’s expert committee on endocrinology reviewed Novo Nordisk’s application to sell Wegovy tablets (1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg) in India. According to Medical Dialogues, the committee did not grant permission and asked for more data, including a bioequivalence study in Indian participants and any clinical trial data generated in India. No launch date has been announced. Novo’s September 2026 release says the pill is on sale in the US, UK, UAE and Germany. Anything sold online in India as a “Wegovy pill” is not an approved product. Semaglutide tablets for type 2 diabetes (Rybelsus) are a separate product, not the weight-loss pill.

Generic semaglutide injections: on sale since March 2026. Semaglutide lost patent protection in India in March 2026, and several Indian companies launched their own versions on 21 March. ThePrint reported generic launch prices of up to about Rs 4,200 a month, well below the starting prices of Rs 8,800 for Novo’s Ozempic and Rs 10,850 for Wegovy at the time. Not every generic was approved for weight management at launch; some were for type 2 diabetes only. Prices have changed since, so check the current MRP with your pharmacist.

Side effects and risks

Stomach problems are the most common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, heartburn and burping. They tend to be worse when you start or move up a dose. Smaller meals help.

Pancreatitis. MedlinePlus lists ongoing pain in the upper left or middle of the stomach, sometimes spreading to the back, with or without vomiting, as a reason to get help right away.

Gallbladder problems. Watch for upper stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever or pale, clay-coloured stools.

Kidney strain. Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you. Passing much less urine, or swelling in the legs or feet, needs a doctor’s attention.

Muscle loss. Some of the weight you lose is lean tissue as well as fat. A 2026 review in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation found the loss is mostly fat with a modest drop in lean mass, and no consistent decline in strength. The authors recommend resistance training and enough good-quality protein. In Indian meals that means dal, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, soy and chana at every meal, especially when your appetite is low.

Weight regain after stopping. In the STEP 1 extension study, people who had lost 17.3% of their weight on weekly semaglutide injections regained about two-thirds of it within a year of stopping, and improvements in blood pressure and blood sugar faded too. Ask your doctor before you start what the plan is if you need to stop. Habits such as a walk after meals and plenty of filling, low-calorie vegetables are worth building while you’re on treatment, so they’re in place if you come off it.

Why you need a prescription, and a doctor who follows up

A doctor needs to confirm you’re eligible, look at your other medicines and conditions, set up the dose steps, and watch for side effects. Don’t use compounded, imported or “research” products sold online, and don’t share pens or tablets. Don’t change your dose or switch between pill and injection on your own; if you want to switch, your doctor will decide the starting dose.

When to see a doctor

Get urgent medical help (call 112 or go to an emergency department) if you have:

See your doctor soon about a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness or trouble swallowing, vision changes, a racing heartbeat, or side effects that don’t settle after a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

Trial results for the 25 mg pill and the weekly injection are in a broadly similar range, though they come from different studies. The pill only works well if you take it correctly every single morning. If you can’t manage the morning routine, the weekly injection may suit you better.

Is the Wegovy pill available in India?

Not as of late October 2026. A CDSCO expert committee asked Novo Nordisk for more data in September 2026, and no approval or launch date has been announced.

Can I switch from injections to the pill?

Possibly, where the pill is approved. People in the OCTANE study kept losing weight after switching, but it had no comparison group. Your doctor should plan any switch.

Can I take the pill with my morning tea?

No. Take it with up to 120 ml of plain water only, then wait at least 30 minutes before tea, coffee, food or other tablets.

Will I have to take it forever?

Many people need it long term to keep the weight off, since most of the lost weight tends to return after stopping. Agree a long-term plan with your doctor before starting.
